The MOVE project, led by Buzzing Roots CIC, successfully delivered an innovative initiative aimed at encouraging physical activity among young people in Leicester City. Recognising the unique potential of dance as a tool for physical, emotional, and social well-being, MOVE provided an inclusive, non-competitive alternative to traditional sports.

The project specifically targeted children enrolled in the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme at primary schools and local sports facilities across Leicester City, responding to a community-identified need for diverse and enriching physical activities.

Reaching 27 HAF providers and working with 1024 children during the project.

MOVE’s distinctive approach combined physical fitness with creativity and education through two exciting workshops: Food Superpowers and Magical Microgreens.

These workshops integrated dance-based workouts targeting all major muscle groups, promoting improvements in balance, flexibility, strength, and stamina.

Each session was carefully designed to engage children not only in physical movement but also in creating their own choreography, encouraging self-expression and cognitive development.

Warm-up and cool-down routines incorporated elements of yoga to promote overall wellness and relaxation, making the sessions both comprehensive and enjoyable.

MOVE uniquely blended physical activity with nutritional awareness. Children learned about the importance of healthy eating and how it connects to their physical and mental well-being. By combining movement with education, the project inspired participants to think critically about their dietary choices, equipping them with knowledge that could lead to healthier habits in the long term. By addressing both physical and nutritional health, MOVE aimed to foster a sustained awareness of wellness.

Feedback:

“I enjoyed tasting the vegetable microgreens” (3 children from this setting had never eaten radish before and enjoyed trying it)
“I learnt that carbs give you lots of energy”
“I didn’t know that different coloured fruits and vegetables gave you different nutrients until today”
“I surprised myself by trying the radish microgreen”
“I tried the vegetables – I don’t usually like them but I enjoyed the red cabbage microgreen”
“I was surprised the workshop was so active, I definitely learnt more by moving”

The project was particularly impactful for children who face emotional and behavioural challenges or have an aversion to competitive sports. The supportive and inclusive environment of the MOVE workshops helped to develop social skills, boost self-confidence, and foster a sense of community among participants. Through the interactive and collaborative nature of the workshops, young people were empowered to explore new ways of expressing themselves, creating opportunities for personal growth and resilience.

The success of MOVE lies in its ability to change perceptions of physical activity, making it fun, accessible, and enriching for children from all backgrounds.

Buzzing Roots CIC is proud to have delivered a project that not only improved physical fitness but also nurtured emotional and social development, leaving a lasting impact on the young participants.
