Million Hours project
Urban Grow is a community project at Wheatland Road Gardens in Mowmacre, Leicester, creating a welcoming, safe and inclusive outdoor space for young people aged 10–18.
The project provides free activities and opportunities for young people to develop skills, make friends, explore their creativity and have a say in shaping their local community.
A huge thank you to the UK Government and The National Lottery Community Fund for making these opportunities possible through the Million Hours Fund.
Cooking has become one of the young people's favourite activities at Urban Grow, helping them develop practical cooking skills, confidence, teamwork and independence. From growing their own ingredients in the garden to using them to prepare meals, young people are learning about the journey from garden to plate and enjoying sharing their knowledge with others.
Young people have shared:
“I've never cooked a pancake from scratch before!”
“The food we cook here is the best!”
“I like cooking and teaching other children how to make food.”
